Twitter’s "@anywhere" feature allows users to post to Twitter from other sites

16/03/2010 12:41 (698 Day 07:46 minutes ago)

The FINANCIAL -- Twitter CEO Evan Williams announced on March 15 a new platform called "@anywhere." According to Reuters the technology gives websites tools for letting users follow Twitter feeds or share media.

"Imagine being able to follow a New York Times journalist directly from her byline, tweet about a video without leaving YouTube, and discover new Twitter accounts while visiting the Yahoo ! home page -- and that's just the beginning," the company wrote in a blog post, CNN reports. The feature, which is expected to launch soon, will be introduced first on 13 Web sites, including The New York Times, Amazon, eBay, Bing, YouTube and The Huffington Post.

“It’s only scratching the surface,’’ Williams said, according to Boston com. “These big partners aren’t the only ones we want to limit it to.’’ Twitter, which has already signed licensing deals with Microsoft Corp., Google Inc., and Yahoo Inc., is looking for more sources of revenue.

This month, it gave real-time search engines, including Collecta and Scoopler, more access to its software code, as the same source reports. That lets the sites come up with new ways to distribute comments that Twitter users post about their lives and consumption habits.

With 75 million users sending 50 million tweets a day, Twitter has been seeking ways to let users do more without being hit with irrelevant tweets, according to News com. By letting users follow people directly on their websites, Twitter gets more users to subscribe and the users are more likely to find interesting people to follow.

Williams said the new feature would make it even easier for users to keep in touch with other members they are following, as the same source reports. "What we're doing is lowering the barriers to using Twitter," Williams said.  "There's something interesting on Twitter for everybody, but not everybody knows that."

According to CNN, Williams made the announcement at the South by Southwest Interactive festival, which is a yearly gathering of technology enthusiasts. Twitter debuted at South by Southwest in 2007.
