The FINANCIAL -- Panasonic Corp. (6752) said on May 31 it will enter the solar cell business in earnest on July 1, according to Nikkei.com.
Taking advantage of the sales channels of its group firms in the housing and home wiring industries, the company will introduce home photovoltaic generation systems loaded with solar cells made by SANYO Electric Co. (6764), which Panasonic made into a subsidiary at the end of 2009.
The new products, to be sold by Panasonic Electric Works Co. (6991), are the HIT215 and HIT210 series systems. The systems use SANYO Electric's HIT Photovoltaic Module, which can generate power efficiently even in smaller spaces with limited exposure to sunlight.
The recommended sales prices, excluding installation fees, are 156,450 yen for the HIT215 and 150,150 yen for the HIT210. Panasonic expects to sell 8,000 systems in the current fiscal year.
"We hope to capture a leading 35% share of the domestic solar power generation market in 2012," Executive Vice President Toshihiro Sakamoto told a news conference on May 31.
