The report surveys 400+ international developers, across all  major mobile platforms (iPhone, Android, Symbian, BlackBerry, Java ME, Windows Phone, Flash and mobile web), and features 35 data points spanning the entire application development process. The report represents one of the largest mobile developer surveys to date and the first public app creation benchmarking by platform.

Research participants came from 53 countries and 290 companies. More than 40% of respondents have at least 5 years experience in developing apps, while 78% have been developing apps for more than 12 months. Participants include 20 Forum Nokia Champions, 2 Handango Champions, Android Developer Challenge Finalist, Microsoft MVPs and Flash Lite Developer Challenge winners, to name a few.

The research provides insights into all the steps of mobile app development, from application planning, code development and debugging, to support, go-to-market channels, promotion, revenue generation, as well as covering hot topics such as the role of open source and network operators.

James Parton, Head of Developer Marketing at Telefonica, said: “For a long time we have felt the industry has been lacking research that credibly tackled the key issues facing developers. ‘Developer Economics 2010 and Beyond’ was an ambitious project. I am confident that due to the quality of the participants, this research has uncovered many of the key issues in application development today.”

Andreas Constantinou, Research Director at VisionMobile, said: “This major research project represents a first, in terms of the depth and breadth of the research into mobile developer attitudes and expectations. Our hope is that this report will be seminal in forging bridges between the two sides of the ecosystem: mobile industry decision makers and mobile application developers.”
