The FINANCIAL -- SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. (SANYO), one of  the world leaders of rechargeable battery technologies, is pleased to announce that it will supply its lithium-ion battery system to the electric motorcycle “EC-03” which Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.(Yamaha Motor) will release in September, 2010 in Japan.

The lithium-ion battery system has been designed for electric motors and will be used by Yamaha Motor combines a number of 18650 sized cylindrical lithium-ion batteries (Diameter:18mm x Height: 65mm) typically used for consumer equipment such as laptops.

SANYO has been supplying its lithium-ion batteries for Yamaha Motor’s electric assist bicycle “PAS” since 2004. Building on the experience, SANYO has been able to develop a battery system which further increases power output and enhances performance under low temperature conditions for electric motorcycles. The control technologies for heat management have also been advanced in the new battery system along with other improvements.

Given the growing public concern for conserving the environment, interest in the expanded use of electric vehicles, such as automobiles and motorcycles, is increasing. SANYO has been leading the rechargeable battery market for information devices such as cell phones and laptops by using its lithium-ion batteries that feature high energy density, high voltage and an excellent safety record. After starting development of large capacity and high voltage battery systems which combine hundreds of battery cells in 2004, SANYO has established a system for mass production of 2 battery systems: a standard battery system for electric motors (EVB-101), used for light electric vehicles, and a standard battery system for power storage (DCB-101), which can be utilized for SANYO ’s SES (Smart Energy System) by combining with solar panels.

Recently, SANYO ’s lithium-ion batteries for consumer equipment was utilized in a battery system housed in Japan EV Club’s Electric vehicle “Mira EV”, which now holds the Guinness World Record for travel distance without recharging. The technology was also a part of an EV racing car owned by “Team Yokohama EV Challenge”, a team of Yokohama Rubber, to achieve an all-time record in a hill climbing motor sports race in the USA.

The lithium-ion battery system for the electric motorcycle has been specially designed for Yamaha Motor with use of SANYO ’s control technology which combines a number of batteries for consumer equipment to one system.

SANYO is helping to create new markets for lithium-ion batteries, while contributing towards the realization of a low-carbon society.
