The FINANCIAL -- Serhii Tihipko, former presidential candidate, leader of the Strong Ukraine party, thinks real political rivalry between presidential frontrunners - Party of Regions leader Viktor Yanukovych and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko - contributes to democracy, Tihipko's press-service informs.
"Outcomes of the presidential runoff show intense political competition between the presidential frontrunners. And this does good for Ukrainian democracy," Tihipko said.
Election returns are clear and will not be changed despite possible appeals to courts by Tymoshenko's team, Tihipko said.
"The fate of the presidential runoff has been determined. There is no doubt that Yulia Tymoshenko's team will appeal the results in courts, but a new Maidan will not be gathered," Tihipko said.
Law enforcement bodies should respond to any irregularities established during the second round of the presidential election and bring prosecution against people concerned, Tihipko said.
A newly-elected president needs stable support by parliamentary majority to put reforms into practice, Tihipko noted.
The Strong Ukraine party will actively contest parliamentary seats in case of early parliamentary elections, he added.
As Ukrainian News reported, voting in the presidential runoff ended at 20:00 on February 7, and counting of votes began.
With 99.97% of the votes counted, Yanukovych received 48.96% and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko 45.47%.
