The FINANCIAL -- Osaka, Japan, September 8, 2011 – Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited
announced that SYR-472 has entered into phase III clinical trials in
Japan to evaluate its safety and efficacy for the treatment of type 2
diabetes.
Discovered by Takeda San Diego, Inc., a Takeda wholly-owned subsidiary located in San Diego, California, SYR-472 is a dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-4) inhibitor, which blocks DPP-4. DPP-4 is an enzyme that selectively degrades two of the hormones that increase insulin secretion, thereby increasing insulin secretion and lowering blood glucose levels. SYR-472 is a once-weekly oral formulation, expected to help control blood glucose level as well as to improve medication compliance in patients who receive treatment for type 2 diabetes.
Takeda is vigorously continuing its development activities to offer a new treatment option to type 2 diabetes patients with a range of clinical conditions.
