Strengthening ties to Latin America with visit to Mercosur Summit

The FINANCIAL -- Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs, Richard Marles, is this week visiting Montevideo, Uruguay, to attend the Mercosur Summit on 19 and 20 December.

Mercosur is the pre-eminent economic grouping in South America and pursues trade liberalisation and a common market between its members — Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.

Trade growth between Australia and Latin America has been significant. Two-way goods trade has grown from slightly over $1 billion in 1990 to nearly $7 billion in 2010.
