Rasmussen Reports: 55% View Michelle Obama Favorably

16/03/2010 15:19 (697 Day 15:22 minutes ago)

The FINANCIAL -- Fifty-five percent (55%) of U.S. voters now have a favorable opinion of Michelle Obama, down five points from early February. That includes 32% who view her very favorably.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 37% have an unfavorable view of the first lady, with 16% who view her very unfavorably.

One year after her husband’s inauguration, 58% had a favorable opinion of Mrs. Obama, and in early November of last year, 62% felt that way about her.

Women favor Mrs. Obama by a two-to-one margin compared to men. Over 90% of African-Americans have a favorable view of her versus 52% of white voters and 39% of voters of other ethnicities.

A majority (51%) of all voters say Mrs. Obama will be at least somewhat involved in policy-making decisions, including 13% who say she’ll be very involved. Still, the latest finding is only slightly higher than the lowest level measured on this question in early January.

Thirty-five percent (35%) say Mrs. Obama will not be very involved with policy decisions. That figure includes 10% who say she won’t be involved at all. The number of voters who feel this way has steadily increased since March 2009.

Men and women are almost evenly divided on how involved they think the first lady will be in policy decisions. More Democrats (65%) than Republicans (51%) feel she’ll be at least somewhat involved.

In early February, just after Mrs. Obama kicked off her anti-childhood obesity campaign, “Let’s Move,” 44% of American adults said it’s at least somewhat likely the campaign will have a significant impact on childhood obesity in America. Another 45%, however, said it’s not very or not at all likely “Let’s Move” will help combat this problem.

Just after the election in November 2008, 62% of voters said Mrs. Obama was more likely to be an activist first lady like Hillary Clinton rather than a more traditional one like Laura Bush.
