Idiocracy-motivation problem in Georgia - 2007/12/18 19:26
Critique is welcome!
IDIOCRACY
It was November 6th when the stream of clients for business loans stopped coming to maximally self-empowered experimental branch of Bank “X”. The place where the head of the branch has no longer the functions of traditional manager, but the leader because of high delegation and independency of the branch from all the entire bank. Unfortunately, the problem that came out has not been foreseen. It was already November 15th. None of the clients have opened the door of the building. That was where the management that is about: organization, methods and processes, was no longer needed, but we; we needed fresh ideas and actions, experiments and etc. – in other words – Leadership. That was the point I called all colleagues together and I began to generate ideas, the ways of promoting the branch service, making plans and telling people how to reach the door of salvation, and how to open it. Everyone loved my ideas, but wait… will the head of the branch ever listen to words of 19 year old RSO, which has no experience, and want to go for the lead? No… The answer I got was simple: “Hmm, your ideas are awful.” What a mistake!
My ideas might have been terrible, but therefore the leader should never suppress the motivation of follower, but keep me goaded with creative! The clock stopped counting seconds, and began counting hours of tragedy and my disappointment with branch’s management style. This is not the leadership; this is just the classic example of Georgian management - Idiocracy, because people who are at the top, our “leaders”, always try to devastate the bright ideas coming from bottom, because they don’t like to be followers at the same time. This is what needs to be changed, because “The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers”, said the American Attorney and Political Activist Ralph Nader, but the leaders should also know how to be followers. Without it one never can become the leader, because I think that the man has to learn to follow, before he can lead. The leader should always think about producing more leaders, self-leaders – the people who can think on their own, think of new ways, achievements, the people who are more delegated, and the people who need less attention from leader. Moreover, the superleader should never work using the power of people; instead, he should work with the people. I think these are key factors for success, because working with people who know what they want, with people who know what they must do in order to get what they want, is more efficient than working with people who are like zombies. My belief is that, when a man carries a load knowing why he is doing that, for what purpose, the man will get to the destination faster, thus raising the productivity. This is the example of being follower, who tries to reach the titular of leader. But in order to get it, he must also think of the things he can additionally do in order to carry the load faster. However working with people who can lead themselves is something only superleaders can attain, some of the so called “leaders”, might have followers who try to become leaders, but the way they are taking is shuttered. As an example, here I am. The right move of my “boss” could bring us to success. What he had to do is be a superleader. First of all he must be highly self-actualized to know himself, to know life and etc. Then he must set the goals for all of us and inspire us to set the goals for ourselves. The superleader should give us the examples, of what productivity and success we can reach if taking good initiative, setting own goals, be optimistic, learner, and group worker. I think that the way the superleader should refer to people, followers – leaders, has to be persuasive, thus exerting no demagoguism. The good superleader also would nurture us to trust and respect him, in order to follow him. Maybe I’m not the superleader yet, because I could not acquire the trust of potential followers. I assume I am one of them, and in this situation, why should I be under the risk of loosing my job? Yet I have not lost my faith in myself, moreover, I continued investigation and at last I found out, that the ideas and way through I purposed for getting out of junky situation had been once implemented Bank “Y”, Romania. I have my view of leadership and self-leadership, believing that working with myself and with help of my self-confidence I can do anything and the view of my self-centered manager will never raise a gate upon my way.
