Dimitry Kumsishvili: “Training ship will help the Batumi Maritime Academy students to develop professional skills”

The FINANCIAL -- “Today, a training ship was transferred to the Batumi Maritime Academy. This is the first time during the 90 years of its existence, when the Academy has such an important facility. The Academy implemented significant educational and infrastructural reforms during the recent 5 years but this ship is the very component that the Academy needed for the perfect educational program which will also facilitate the further employment of its students,” – the First Vice Prime Minister of Georgia, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Dimitry Kumsishvili stated at the official ceremony dedicated to transfer the training ship to the Batumi Maritime Academy.

This is the first time during the 90-year history when the Batumi Maritime Academy of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia has its own training ship. The state-owned tanker "Cadet" was handed over to the Academy free of charge.

Dmitry Kumsishvili stated that the ship actually was ready for sale, but it was decided that “the ship will remain in state ownership to serve for the good of the country and allow our maritime students to increase the prospects of future employment”. As the First Vice Prime Minister noted, the training ship will facilitate the educational and training process of the Maritime Academy students.

Today’s ceremony in Batumi was attended by the First Vice Prime Minister and the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Dimitry Kumsishvili, the Deputy Minister Cherkezishvili, the Chairman of the Adjara Government Zurab Pataradze, the Head of the Maritime Transport Agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development Mamuka Akhaladze and the Rector of the Batumi State Maritime Academy Irakli Sharabidze.

Batumi State Maritime Academy had no training ship before. The Academy students will have the opportunity to take the marine practice directly on the ship starting from 2018, according to Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia.
