The FINANCIAL -- It is International Coffee Day on October 1, and to mark this occasion, here are some interesting figures on the imports of coffee into the EU:

In 2017, the European Union (EU) imported almost 3 million tonnes of coffee from abroad, 5 % more than 10 years ago. The imports were worth €8.8 billion.

Most of the coffee imported in 2017 from non-EU countries came from two countries: Brazil (840 000 tonnes exported to the EU, or 29 %) and Vietnam (627 000 tonnes, 23 %). They were followed by Honduras (211 000 tonnes, 7 %), Colombia (188 000 tonnes, 6 %), Uganda (149 000 tonnes, 5 %), India (148 000 tonnes, 5 %), Indonesia (141 000, 5 %) and Peru (119 000, 4 %).

These imports were mainly into Germany (with 1.1 million tonnes imported, or 37 % of the EU imports) and Italy (552 000 tonnes, 19 %), ahead of Belgium (268 000 tonnes, 9 %), Spain (239 000 tonnes, 8 %), France (217 000 tonnes, 7 %) and the United Kingdom (161 000 tonnes, 6 %).
