External Merchandise Trade of Georgia in January-June 2018

The FINANCIAL -- In January-June 2018 external merchandise trade (excluding non-declared trade) of Georgia amounted to USD 5 985.9 million, 24.3 percent higher year-on-year.

The exports equaled USD 1 593.6 million (28.5 percent higher), while the imports stood at USD 4 392.3 million (22.9 percent higher). The negative trade balance was USD 2 798.7 million in January-June 2018 and its share in external trade turnover constituted 46.8 percent. Export excluding re-export amounted to USD 1 148.5 million, 16.3 percent higher year-on-year.

The table below shows monthly data for 2016-2018 exports and imports in absolute indicators and their changes (in percentage) compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

EXPORTS AND IMPORTS DYNAMICS BY MONTHS, 2016-2018

In January-June 2018 the external trade turnover of Georgia with the EU countries amounted to USD 1 644.5 million, grew by 25.2 percent compared to the corresponding indicator of the previous year. Exports amounted to USD 367.8 million (21.5 percent higher), while imports amounted to USD 1 276.7 million (26.3 percent higher). The share of these countries in the external trade turnover of Georgia amounted to 27.5 percent, 23.1 percent in exports and 29.1 percent in imports (in January -June 2017 27.3, 24.4 and 28.3 percent correspondingly). 32.5 percent of the trade deficit came to the EU countries (30.3 percent in Janu-ary-June 2017).

In January- June 2018 the external trade turnover of Georgia with the CIS countries totaled USD 2 037.3 million (higher by 33.9 percent compared to the January-June 2017). Exports stood at USD 720.1 million (50.7 percent higher), while imports equaled USD 1 317.1 million (26.2 percent higher). The share of the CIS countries in the external trade turnover of Georgia constituted 34.0 percent, 45.2 percent in exports and 30.0 percent in imports (In January- June 2017 31.6, 38.5 and 29.2 percent, respectively). In January -June 2018 compared to previous year, CIS countries accounted for 21.3 percent of the overall trade deficit (24.3 percent in January-June 2017).

In January-June 2018 share of the top ten trading partners in the total external trade turnover of Geor-gia amounted to 66.8 percent. The top trading partners were Turkey (USD 858.1 million), Russia (USD 650.1 million) and China (USD 510.0 million).

MAJOR COMMODITY GROUPS BY EXPORTS AND IMPORTS

In January-June 2018 Copper ores and concentrates reclaimed the first place in the list of top export items, equaling USD 242.2 million, or 15.2 percent of total exports. Exports Ferro-alloys of totaled USD 186.0 million and its share in the total exports amounted to 11.7 percent. Motor cars occupied the third place. Exports of this commodity group stood at USD 163.5 million and 10.3 percent of the total exports.

COMMODITY GROUPS BY EXPORTS IN JANUARY-JUNE 2018

The top import commodities in January-June 2018 were Petroleum and petroleum oils imports of which amounted to USD 402.0 million and 9.2 percent of the total imports. Motor cars followed in the list with USD 272. 9 million, or 6.2 percent of imports. Copper ores and concentrates came third with USD 181.2 million (4.1 percent of imports).
