The FINANCIAL -- Giorgi Margvelashvili, President of Georgia has signed a decree of pardon, according to which in total 83 inmates are granted clemency.
According to Zviad Koridze, Head of the Pardon Commission, 40 inmates, among them one female will be released from penitentiary institutions on August 2; while 43 inmates, among them two females and a minor get various forms of sentence commutations. President Margvelashvili has set one of the inmate’s release date, having a lifelong sentence.
The Pardon Commission reviewed 976 cases in July, 2018.
As a result of consultations with non-governmental organizations, public groups and civil activists, President Margvelashvili has ended the moratorium on reviewing the cases of inmates who have committed violent crimes, declared on April 17, 2018.
According to Zviad Koridze, President Margvelashvili and Kakhi Kakhishvili, Minister of Corrections showed willingness to involve representatives of the Ministry to the Pardon Commission couple of months ago; however, as a result of the regime change and reorganization, the Ministry of Justice has declined this initiative.
