Project develops enhanced space cooperation between EU and Ukraine

The FINANCIAL -- An EU-funded Twinning Project in space cooperation with Ukraine has succeeded in harmonizing Ukrainian legislation to EU standards and supporting Ukraine’s involvement in EU Space Programmes, particularly in Satellite Navigation (EGNOS/Galileo) and Earth Remote Sensing (GMES-Copernicus).

The project was implemented by the Spanish National Institute of Aerospace Technology (INTA) and the State Space Agency of Ukraine (SSAU), according to EU Neighbourhood Info.

"For a number of years space has been a promising field of co-operation between the EU and Ukraine. Ukraine has space technologies which are acknowledged on a worldwide scale, and people with skills," said Berend de Groot, Head of Cooperation of the EU Delegation to Ukraine.

Satellite navigation and Earth remote sensing activities are two of the most dynamically developing areas in the EU. The deployment of in-orbit space Earth observation systems and development of an effective ground system for using Earth observation data are among the main priorities of Ukraine's space industry in these areas.

With a budget of €1.45 million, the project aimed at accelerating approximation between Ukraine and the EU in the area of space and to enhance legal, scientific and industrial cooperation in the area.
