Ericsson and NTT in technical collaboration on next generation cloud servers

The FINANCIAL -- Ericsson and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), Japan's one of the leading telecommunications operators, have initiated a collaboration focusing on the next generation of cloud servers.

As part of the agreement, Ericsson and NTT will conduct a study aimed at determining how hardware disaggregation, management and control technologies can improve the efficiency of operations and application software development, particularly in reducing time to market for new services, according to Ericsson.

The target is to realize benefits such as increased hardware utilization, efficiency and simplification in operation and application software development.

The collaboration will verify and demonstrate the capabilities and functionalities of Ericsson's Hyperscale Datacenter System 8000, which is based on Intel Rack Scale Architecture. The Ericsson Cloud Manager and Ericsson Cloud Execution Environment solutions will also be deployed.

Nobuyuki Watanabe, Senior Vice President, Head of Information Network Laboratory Group, NTT, says: "After years of NTT's R&D effort on MAGONIA and other technologies, NTT launched the NetroSphere concept in order to bring enhanced flexibility and elasticity in the carrier network while also reducing costs. Disaggregation of server hardware into small modular components is one of the missing key technologies to realize our concept in order to achieve faster provisioning of new and innovative services. We expect technical contribution in this field from Ericsson. Through the open collaboration with partners like Ericsson, we will further advance our vision.

The two companies started part of the hardware disaggregation study in 2015 and will perform joint proof-of-concept trials using the Hyperscale Datacenter System 8000 in 2016. The collaboration will also cover use cases, requirements, technical solution concepts and study of evolved technologies for the more advanced hardware disaggregation envisioned in the future.
